Reminder to keep dogs leashed during nesting season

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is reminding visitors to keep dogs on leash at Waldo Cove Regional Park during Long-billed Curlew nesting season to help protect one of the area’s most sensitive wildlife nesting events.

Long-billed Curlews are a notable nesting species in the region, and the presence of nesting birds at Waldo Cove Park is an important reminder of the area’s ecological value.

Ground-nesting birds such as curlews are especially vulnerable to disturbance, particularly during nesting season, when repeated disruptions can cause stress, nest abandonment, or harm to eggs and chicks.

In recent weeks, the RDEK has noticed an increase in dogs being off leash in the park.

While many dog owners are acting responsibly, even well-behaved dogs can unintentionally disturb nesting birds and sensitive habitat.

To help protect nesting curlews, all visitors are asked to keep dogs leashed at all times while in Waldo Cove Park.

“Waldo Cove Park provides an important habitat for wildlife, and the nesting curlews we are seeing there are especially significant,” said RDEK Environmental Services Foreman Brian De Paoli. “We are asking all park users to do their part by keeping dogs on leash during nesting season, which typically wraps up in mid-July.

“This small action can make a big difference in protecting these birds and giving them the best chance to successfully nest.”

The RDEK appreciates the cooperation of residents and visitors in helping preserve Waldo Cove Park as a safe and respectful space for wildlife and people alike.
