City bypassing into the Elk
The City of Fernie announced April 22 it must bypass treated effluent into the Elk River between April 23 and May 7.
In a public notice the city stated, “in order to dispose of excessive amounts of stormwater in the sanitary sewer collection system due to recent rainstorms and snow melt it is necessary to temporarily bypass treated effluent to the Elk River. The bypass will take place April 23 to May 7 in accordance with the Ministry of Environment operating permit.”
Fair water advisory
The City of Fernie also re-issued a “FAIR” Water Quality Advisory yesterday (April 30), effective immediately and reminds the public that due to normal spring snowmelt conditions and in the event of heavy rains, turbidity levels in our water typically fluctuate throughout the spring season.
During these fluctuations the city issues Public Notices advising of the water quality ratings.
Current testing shows that the Fernie water quality is fair. The City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. For these at risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.
