New lease for Windermere Valley Museum

The Windermere Valley Historical Society is getting a new lease on life for the Invermere-based Museum.

District of Invermere council Feb. 14 unanimously approved a five-year lease for the museum site to the Historical Society – with an annual rent of $10.

Chief administrative officer Chris Prosser reported, “The Windermere Valley Historical Society has a long standing lease that is typically renewed every three years.  The proposed recommendation will renew the lease arrangement with the Society for the next five years.  Under the Community Charter, council can authorize the execution of leases for real property owned by the Municipality.  Any lease longer than five years requires the assent of the electors through an alternate approval or referendum process.”

“I think it is great that they hold onto our heritage the way they do,” remarked Coun. Paul Denchuk.

“That group volunteers and they operate that facility on minimal funding,” said Mayor Gerry Taft. “It’s really an example of what volunteers can do.”

Coun. Greg Anderson agreed. “Hard work and desire,” he said.
