Columbia Valley RCMP Report

This past week, August 17 through August 23, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 103 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files to which our officers responded.

No injuries in Windermere crash

On Tuesday, August 18 at 7:15 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Windermere Loop Road. The driver of a Dodge Journey was travelling on Westroc Mine Road and failed to negotiate the turn onto Windermere Loop Road. The vehicle slid off the road and into a utility pole. There were no injuries to the occupants but the vehicle had extensive damage and had to be towed.

Semi rear-ends another semi in Radium

On Wednesday, August 19 at about 12:30 p.m., a two-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 93/95 in Radium Hot Springs. The driver of a commercial vehicle was travelling southbound when the traffic reportedly came to a sudden stop. The driver of the commercial truck was unable to stop in time and ran into the back of a second commercial truck and trailer. The driver of the truck that was unable to stop in time was issued a violation ticket for following too closely. No injuries were reported.

Mountain bike stolen at Panorama

On Wednesday, August 19, a green Santa Cruz Megatower mountain bike was stolen from a parkade at Panorama Mountain Resort sometime between 1 and 2 p.m. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

Impaired driver stopped in Invermere

On Thursday, August 20 at about 11 p.m., an officer was making patrols in Invermere when he observed a Ford Ranger failing to maintain its lane. The officer conducted a traffic stop and spoke to the driver of the truck who complied with a roadside breath demand. The driver provided two breath samples which both registered as “fails.” As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30-days.

Driver assessed in hospital after crash near Spur Valley

On Friday, August 21 at about 8:30 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle collision involving a Ford F150 on Highway 95 near Spur Valley. Officers spoke to the driver of the pickup who said he was travelling northbound and wasn’t sure what caused him to drive off the road and down an embankment. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance to be assessed. The driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to keep right.

Sharp-eyed officer spots stolen vehicle in driveway

On Friday, August 21 at about 6:50 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols of Kootenay Number 3 Road in Windermere when she observed a stolen Nissan Versa parked at a residence. The car had been reported stolen out of Golden. The officer spoke to the occupants of the residence who denied knowing who the vehicle belonged to. The vehicle was seized for a forensic examination. The investigation is ongoing.

Suspected drug impaired driver arrested for possession of controlled substance

On Saturday, August 22 at 7:45 a.m., police received a report of a Kia Forte parked on the side of Highway 93 near Kootenay Crossing. An officer attended and, based on observations and a conversation with the occupant, believed the individual was impaired by drugs. While speaking to the driver, the officer observed what was believed to be a controlled substance inside the vehicle. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and transported to cells where he was held until sober. The individual received a violation ticket for driving without due care as well as a 24-hour driving prohibition. The investigation into possession of a controlled substance remains under investigation.
