EK Chamber of Mines’ Core Storage Library has permanent home

The East Kootenay Chamber of Mines is a non-profit society formed to support mining and exploration in the East Kootenay.

A base of local geologists, prospectors and mineral / placer claim owners volunteer to act as directors and project managers. We store and have available miscellaneous geological books and all mineral assessment reports to 2005 inclusive in hardcopy. Our office is located at Suite 210- 16 11th Ave. South, Cranbrook, B.C.

The core storage project has been in the making for many years, and the storage of this local drill core is very important. This core has been recognized by Geoscience BC, Geological Survey of Canada and Geoscientists as a teaching tool for students of college and universities. The drill core is science of the Earth’s formation and subsequent geological events, and can be of extreme value in locating new economic ore bodies.

Unfortunately most drill core has historically been left to deteriorate in the bush. Some is taken to private storage locations and put in core racks and eventually thrown away, with all the geological knowledge being lost forever.

The East Kootenay Chamber of Mines Core Storage Library is now a permanent site and will have a historical and educational value for some time to come. Geoscientists and exploration companies can come and look at the core to assist in their geological evaluation of properties without creating any new disturbance.

We have along with the Geological Survey of Canada digitally scanned all data from Teck Cominco Sullivan Mine and Regional Exploration Programs. We also have thousands of meters of Diamond Drill Core, stored on private property and will be moved to the new site as funding for the project allows.

The core site is chain-linked fenced and gated for protection of the drill core. Storage of the drill core is in covered organized racks which are accessible year round on a maintained road near Cranbrook.

We have received donated funds from Geo Science B.C., Columbia Basin Trust, the BC Government and local mining and exploration companies among others.

We still need continuing financial support for this project. The East Kootenay Chamber of Mines would like to see the core library used by future generations of exploration companies and geologists.

President, E.K.C.M.
