Farmers Appreciation week celebrated in Kootenays

Celebrate British Columbia’s outstanding farmers, agriculture, and food during Farmers Appreciation Week. The fourth annual Farmers Appreciation Week runs from September 8 to 15 across the province.

The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market is on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June to October.

“The best produce comes from our own communities, produced by hardworking farmers,” said Bill Bennett, Kootenay East MLA and Minister of Energy and Mines. “When we buy local, we’re supporting our neighbours and our province’s economy.”

Last week, Agriculture Minister Pat Pimm issued a statement in advance of Farmers Appreciation Week, noting “the best way to show appreciation to the hardworking people who produce B.C.’s food is to shop local, year round. Not much says fresh food better than a farmers’ market.”

Fernie, Jaffray-Baynes Lakes, Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook and Sparwood all have local farmers’ markets.

The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market is on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June to October, and is located on 10th Avenue South between 1st and 2nd Streets South.

The Fernie Mountain Market takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays from Canada Day to Labour Day, and is located at Rotary Park.

The Sparwood Farmers Market is on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. from June 28 to September 6, and is located at the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce parking lot.

The Invermere Farmers’ Market runs from June 22 to Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the downtown.

The Kimberley Farmers Market closed for the season Sept. 2 and the Jaffray-Baynes Lakes’ always lively market ended August 31.
