Volunteers play significant role at EKRH

Students in Cranbrook have plenty of opportunities to support health care at East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH) through the ongoing volunteer program.

The volunteer program was expanded by Ewa Crowther, coordinator, central functions at EKRH, based on the number of requests received from students from Mount Baker Secondary School and College of the Rockies locally, interested in gaining hands-on experience in health care.

“Our team of volunteers wear pink t-shirts and pink volunteer lanyards. The colour pink was chosen because it is a warm and uplifting colour that promotes positivity and approachability. It also creates a calming, friendly impression, helping volunteers appear welcoming and approachable to others,” said Ewa Crowther, coordinator, central functions at EKRH.

This additional group of volunteers at EKRH are actively involved in patient care on the medical unit, assisting long-stay patients and those with various medical needs.

They read books, engage in activities, have conversations, and provide companionship to patients. Volunteers also support patients in the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Care, Oncology, Psychiatry and the Post-Surgical unit.

Since it began on July 1, 2024, eight active volunteers have taken part, with 10 new volunteers in the process of being trained.

Ewa Crowther has played a significant role in the development of the program. Her leadership ensures the program aligns with goals of the organization, while also fostering a positive impact on both the hospital community and the volunteers who take part.

The program has also received invaluable support from Janice Talarico, director of clinical operations at EKRH, whose active involvement has been instrumental to its success.

“This program not only allows students to learn about the health care system, but also provides opportunities to explore potential career paths in the medical field or related areas while developing valuable new skills,” said Talarico.
