Emergency vehicles and the public’s responsibilities
An emergency vehicle is defined as ‘police, fire, and ambulance,’ that at times, can be seen driving their emergency vehicles, with lights and sirens activated, at a high rate of speed.
This means a call for service has come in that is an emergency situation. Driving an emergency vehicle at a high rate of speed is a risk to the police, paramedic, firefighter, and is a risk to the public because a citizen has called 911, they need emergency services, and they are not receiving the help they need in a timely manner because the motoring public are not safely slowing their vehicle, moving to the right, and stopping to allow the emergency services to pass.
The Elk Valley RCMP is addressing this important issue because it has been noticed on a number of occasions that the public is not safely yielding to emergency vehicles that are engaged in the lawful execution of their duties.
Once again, when approached by an emergency vehicle, slow down, pull over to the right, and stop your vehicle when safe to do so – do not just pull to the right and keep driving.
