Fernie on Fire benefits Outdoor Connections

By Mary Giuliano

mg-fernie-on-fire-2On Saturday, Jan. 7 the second annual Fernie on Fire was held at the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

This year funds raised are earmarked for Outdoor Connections, a non-profit that provides outdoor education programs. Outdoor Connections has year-round programming for kids of all ages up to Grade 12 that works to promote personal growth.

City of Fernie Councillor Dennis Schafer, who initiated this event, said that he knows they do good work in providing outdoor education while keeping it affordable for everyone.

Christmas trees were brought to the City Public Works yard this past week although some were dropped off the evening of the fire. Fernie Fire Rescue also spent the day picking up trees curbside on January 7 starting at 8 a.m.

Although a little cold the event had tobogganing, music, a BBQ, hot chocolate, cupcakes and the Fernie Brewing tent and was well attended.

mg-fernie-on-fire-1Kudos to Fernie Fire Rescue for volunteering to collect the trees and for being on hand to make sure the fire was safe.

Thanks goes to Councillor Schafer, Fernie Fire Rescue, Outdoor Connections and all of the people that worked to provide a great evening for everyone.
